Two indignities suffered back in the 1940s, in particular, remain indelibly etched in her memory. The first occurred in the latter part of World War II when the Japanese tied her hands behind her back and marched her off to do forced labor for over a year, building roads, digging ditches, and carrying a shoulder pole.
