"Peek through" expresses the idea that something is partly covered and partly showing, but it doesn't give the idea of contrast. It looks like the word usually describes scenery -- red flowers and green leaves, clouds and sky, etc. Also it seems that it often describes a mutual relationship -- e.g. 云霞掩映 -- while "peeking through" clearly says one object obscures the other.
