Apart from singing in the spring plowing season, in the age before chemical pesticides the cuckoos also helped farmers by eating beetles, locusts and moths. This made them an even better candidate as the bird to urge farmers to plant their fields. We used to define 候選 as "(adj) candidate", which made a lot of sense. Dropping (adj) makes it look like it means "a candidate". Actually, I don't mind reverting to that definition. It seems like it might be a good entry to make an exception to the rule of "no parts of speech". Some precedents: - 本科 本科 [ben3 ke1] /undergraduate course/undergraduate (adjective)/ - 雙生 双生 [shuang1 sheng1] /twin (adjective)/twins/ - 行政 行政 [xing2 zheng4] /administrative/executive (adjective)/ |
