It simply occurs in sayings which – taken whole – relate to posthumous reputation: M ~ 蓋棺事定 人一生的功過是非，要到死後才能斷定。 如：「評人功過，必須綜觀始末。蓋棺事定，才算客觀。」 亦作「蓋棺論定」。 I don't think those expressions have the literal meaning "definitive conclusion on the coffin lid". It's not about passing judgement on the *lid*. |
