In summary: Chinese informants tell me that 暖气 refers only to radiators, not to other heating systems. In particular, a forced-air heater must be called 空调, not 暖气. This is different from English usage, and the difference can lead to confusion. For example, when I lived in Beijing I was told that （中国）南方没有暖气, which I understood incorrectly to mean that buildings in southern China are not heated. In fact, southern and central China tend to use forced-air HVAC units, rather than central radiant heating as in the north. I think a more accurate definition will clear this up. |
