Refers to the initial consonants of 端透定泥 知徹澄娘 corresponding to modern Chinese d, t, n and zh, ch.

Explanation: Traditional Chinese phonologists identified 36 initial consonants, which were named after representative characters. (帮 for p, 滂 for ph, 并 for b, 明 for m, etc.) These 36 initials (the exact number varied) were classified by what modern linguists would call place and manner of articulation. The five "places of articulation" were called 五音: 喉音, 牙音, 舌音, 齒音|齿音, 唇音 。For example, 唇音 referred to the labial and labiodental initials 帮滂并明 and 非敷奉微, corresponding to modern Mandarin b, p, m, f.

See the Wikipedia article on rime tables, under 36 initials.
