M ~ 唐代楊貴妃的妹妹虢國夫人常常不敷脂粉即朝見天子的故事。見宋·樂史·楊太真外傳·卷上。
O ~ (of a woman) wear no make-up during an audience with the emperor

1) "the lady guo guo, yang gui fei’s sister, enjoys imperial favor
she rides out through the palace gate in the early mornings
but she spurns the tradition of make-up, powder and rouge
being content with only a penciled eyebrow she kneels before her master"

2) 張祜《虢國夫人》
虢國夫人承主恩,平明騎馬入宮門。
卻嫌粉黛污顏色,淡掃蛾眉朝至尊。

3) 素面朝天 sù miàn cháo tiān. Lit. Bare faced before Emperor (To be confident about ones natural looks).

4) 素面朝天-literally means to face the emperor, with no makeup. However, what it truly means is to be confident. The believed meaning is used to describe people, usually pretty women, who still look pretty without makeup, but it really means to be confident in your true self- without lies, embellishments and makeup.

5) A good writer is like the sister of Yang Kueifei, who could go to see the Emperor himself without powder ['paud?](粉末)and rouge [ru:?, ru:d?](胭脂). All the other beauties in the palace required them.
优美的作家正如杨贵妃的妹妹一般,可以不假脂粉,素面朝天。宫中其余的美人便少不了这两件东西。
This is the reason why there are so few writers who dare to write in simple English.
这就是英文作家中极少敢于用简单文体的理由。

K ~ 素面朝天 sùmiàn cháotiān [ cy ]
"present oneself to the emperor without make-up (of a woman)" ◊—> face the public without adornment or disguise ◊ present oneself as one really is ◊ wear no cosmetics ◊

Seems to have drawn inspiration from the same source as NC:
(of a woman) present oneself to the emperor without make-up—appear as what one really is; wear no cosmetics
Diff:
# 素面朝天 素面朝天 [su4 mian4 chao2 tian1] /lit. to present oneself confidently to the emperor, without makeup (as did the sister of Yang Guifei 楊貴妃|杨贵妃[Yang2 Gui4 fei1])/fig. (of a woman) to show one's natural features, without makeup/to present oneself just as one is, without artifice/
