<< review queue entry 49561 - submitted by 'richwarm' >> From Google Images it looks more like a walkway than a road, although Wp calls it a "gallery road": http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gallery_road but the term "gallery road" doesn't seem to appear much elsewhere on the Web, or in most English dicts. It may be correct, though – it's in OED: gallery-road n. ‘an artificial roadway constructed on piles’ ( Cent. Dict.) The supports are not necessarily trestles - more often it's a cantilever construction. In some images it seems to be just a raised timber walkway, not necessarily on the side of a cliff: http://www.panoramio.com/photo/69645400 http://www.nipic.com/show/1/47/d21d931286d02366.html http://www.nipic.com/show/1/47/86982a34662b4823.html http://www.nipic.com/show/1/7/1c2e6527be74731e.html http://www.mjjq.com/tours/2162.html http://mingyang.idv.tw/zh-TW/node/100?slide=2 boardwalk ~ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boardwalk Editor: This definition and the one in the newest version of ABC look similar because I wrote them both. |
