From the Tang era onward, the discussion of the Chan became ever more widespread.

"Gradually" seems to be the more common meaning; I had to look in several dictionaries before I found a reference to 寖 meaning "to soak," and that meaning might be restricted to a few compounds, like 寖染.

(One reference gave the pronunciation qin1 for "gradually," by the way.)
