The best I could do was the Wikipedia page above (and an answer on an internet forum). I thought I once saw an official list of pronunciations of characters in place names, put out by the (PRC) government, but I can't find it now. Where does one look up such things? ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Editor: I don't know how reliable it is, but the following entry is in Cantonese CEDICT 氹仔 氹仔 [tam5 jai2] [dang4 zai3] /Taipa, an island of Macau/ They probably copied the Mandarin from us LOL But if [tam5 jai2] is correct for the Cantonese, then zai3 seems likely to be OK for the Mandarin. Ref: http://writecantonese8.wordpress.com/2012/02/04/cantonese-cedict-project/ The English Wp article for Taipa which you quote says Taipa Island Chinese 氹仔島 Cantonese Jyutping Tam5 Zai2 Dou2 Cantonese (Yue) - Jyutping Tam5 Zai2 Dou2 - IPA [tɐ̬mtsɐ̌i tǒu] - Yale Romanization Dáhmdzǎi Dǎu which also suggests to me that zai3 is probably appropriate for the Mandarin. |
