<< review queue entry 48871 >> The book Niubi!: The Real Chinese You Were Never Taught in School by Eveline Chao says: "马子 mǎzi (mah dz) A slangy word for “girlfriend.” Originated in Hong Kong and was once used derogatorily (literally means “horse”), but now carries a positive connotation. 凯子 kǎizi (kigh dz) A slangy term for “boyfriend” and the counterpart to mǎzi (above). Describes the ideal image of a boyfriend, as 凯 kǎi (kigh) means “triumphant” and connotes a hero victorious in battle." Wikipedia says: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mandarin_Chinese_profanity "mǎzi (simplified Chinese: 马子; traditional Chinese: 馬子; literally "horse") = a derogatory word for girlfriend. (Possibly influenced by U.S. slang, "filly," used for any girl.)" Couldn't find any source (or native speaker) that suggested the zi3 pronunciation for 马子. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Editor: Neither of those sources (Niubi! and Wp@Mandarin_Chinese_profanity) is very reliable. Regarding "the zi3 pronunciation for 马子", we'll leave it as it is for now. An editor wrote previously "zi3? zi5? Well at the time, I'd heard a very clear zi3 (preceding 3d tone changed to 2nd tone) -- but this is a slang word, might well be pronounced variously, many people will only know the word from reading it, or hearing it once in a movie -- or maybe it was spurious evidence, sudden emphasis on the word." 馬子 doesn't mean girlfriend and 凱子 doesn't mean boyfriend. For example, "boyfriend" doesn't work here: A: 就是穿得很清凉的那个?她在等朋友吧。 The one dressed super scantily? She's waiting for her friends. B: 也许吧。不过也有可能是在钓鱼,就看哪个凯子会上钩。 Probably. But she also might be "fishing", just waiting to see which rich guy she can hook. |
