<< review queue entry 48774 >> Editor: 学生 isn't a good example to make a case that 生 means student, since 学 means study. Chao gives 'student' as one sense of 生, but his example is 招生. MSO says [后缀] 1.(某些指人的名词后缀): 学生 student; pupil; 医生 doctor So in their view, the 生 in 学生 doesn't necessarily mean 'student' - it means 'person'. Plenty more meanings could be added.
