I asked a native speaker how this is used (and how far, since she has a Ph.D). The 级 denotes "level" if you decompose the word but to someone just looking at the definition it might not be immediately clear what is meant by "grade." And in US/Canada we don't call them grades past high school. I'm not sure about UK/AU.
Diff:
- 年級 年级 [nian2 ji2] /grade/CL:個|个[ge4]/
# + 年級 年级 [nian2 ji2] /grade (the year of one's education, can be used through graduate school)/CL:個|个[ge4]/
+ 年級 年级 [nian2 ji2] /grade/year (in school, college etc)/CL:個|个[ge4]/
