<< review queue entry 48299 - submitted by 'richwarm' >> (fig.) seems unnecessary here. We use (fig.) for the following cases 竿頭 竿头 [gan1 tou2] /bamboo pole's uppermost tip/(fig.) acme/ 渠道 渠道 [qu2 dao4] /irrigation ditch/(fig.) channel/means/ 同床共枕 同床共枕 [tong2 chuang2 gong4 zhen3] /to share the bed/(fig.) to be married/ to indicate that the second sense is a figurative extension of the first sense. Occasionally, we also use (fig.) to specify the figurative rather than the literal sense of the English word: 魔影 魔影 [mo2 ying3] /(fig.) specter/ And sometimes it's a combination of these two purposes. But I don't think (fig.) is justified for either purpose in this entry. The "envy" sense is not a figurative extension of the "pinkeye" sense, as far as I can tell. And there is no need to inform the user that "envy" is not a "real sickness" (病). |
