Editor: Although M has a verb sense, GF – which you have previously held up as authoritative – says it's just a noun, and this stance is corroborated by other sources such as New Century, New Age etc. as well as in writings online. E.g.

但是,“紋”字自誕生以來,它的義項很明確,只表示“花紋、紋路”之意,尤其是與動詞“文”的 “刻畫”義項,絕無混淆。...
“文身”有兩層含義,一個指在身上刻畫花紋,另一意為身上刻畫的花紋。前者是動作,後者是名稱。我們說了“紋”不具動詞性質,用“紋身”自然顯得有些不當。

「文」「紋」兩字,音相同,形、義不同。「紋」是後起字,分擔了「文」的花紋義,是名詞。「文」是動詞,指在人身上、臉上刻畫花紋、圖形或文字。
「紋」是個形聲字,本指絲織品上的花紋,如「綾紋」,因此,意符是「糸」。

Although you wrote (in an email) that you "just thought this was pretty obvious" (that 紋 is a verb "to tattoo"), on balance this view doesn't seem to be accepted.
