<< review queue entry 44480 - submitted by 'richwarm' >> What does "chain spherical bacteria" mean? Googling suggests it's a term that comes from ... us :-) It's an attempt at describing the shape of the bacteria, which look like little spheres linked up in a chain. It's not a "pathogen *caused by* ... bacteria" -- it's simply a genus of bacteria, and they are not even necessarily pathogenic ~ "many streptococcal species are nonpathogenic, and form part of the commensal human microbiome of the mouth, skin, intestine, and upper respiratory tract." [Wp] "Streptococcus is a genus of spherical Gram-positive bacteria belonging to the phylum Firmicutes and the lactic acid bacteria group. Cellular division occurs along a single axis in these bacteria, and thus they grow in chains or pairs, hence the name — from Greek στρεπτος streptos, meaning easily bent or twisted, like a chain (twisted chain)."
