I don't think this sort of expression should be called an idiom.
It's just an expression that has a literal meaning and a metaphorical sense as well.
That doesn't make it an idiom.
In ABC it's not labelled an "f.e." (fixed expression).

弦外之音 is not an activity ("reading between the lines").
Rather, it's the meaning that one gets from a text as a result of that activity.

The first two entries aren't variants, since they don't have the same py.

Editor: trad. & simp. form of 弦外之音 are the same.
