Editor: A "gold standard" is "the best, most reliable, or most prestigious thing of its type", and I don't think that's quite the right word to use here, based on the examples I looked at, such as ~

以往被奉為圭臬的「按摩要痛才有效」的觀念,雖被吳神父自己推翻,但有些長年為人按摩的老師傅並不認同這樣的說法。
Father Josef rejects the long-standing notion that "massage has to hurt to be effective," but his ideas are not accepted by some experienced old masseurs.
