I had a talk with an experienced 对外汉语 teacher a few days ago. she noted that there is indeed a notable difference between what's written in the dictionaries/said on the TV and what people actually say in real life, e.g. ji/gei in 给予 another example she gave was 太阳. everyone pronounces it with 轻声 (at least in the north, won't vouch for any places with a heavy accent), but this is actually, well, "wrong". the teacher will mark it as a mistake if your kid writes the pinyin for this word with 轻声 so what happens, is that people have to remember both the colloquial and the "correct" pronunciations and don't forget to switch between them depending on the situation. absurd, I know, but a necessity if you want to impose a partially artificial language on everyone as for 太阳, here's a confirmation from the people who took 普通话开始 http://zhidao.baidu.com/question/73007286.html 阳虽然是标第二声的,但在实际中确实读轻声,<...>,相信我,我们在普通话过级的时候有讲过 also, I don't think we need the CL for this Editor: Classifier ~ A: 妈妈,为什么天上只有一个太阳?
