In cases where there are two pronunciations, dictionaries generally give only one. We do have a token number of entries which give the pronunciation both with and without the neutral tone (such as 父亲), but we don't propose to go further down that path -- there are *hundreds* of what YR Chao calls "optional neutral tone" words, such as 办法, 浙江, 八十 ... . Often enough, it will seem that dictionaries all line up to say that only one of the two ways is correct. For this type of word, if CEDICT gives a pronunciation which is different from what all the other dictionaries say, it's not a bad thing. People might think there's something wrong with their ears if they keep hearing something that no dictionary acknowledges. :-) We're not interested in the "standard" required for some particular test, or for newsreaders etc. People who need to know about that sort of standard should be looking to other sources. |
