Editor: "um, what?" Yes, kung fu balls. Also known as Baoding health balls. Supposedly used as weapons (暗器), at least in novels. 具体来说铁球始于宋朝，起初是实心球，又称铁蛋子，既健身又防身，是武器的一种。 Example: "I’m not sure if this is old news, but I’ve been using a pair of those kung fu balls (iron baoding balls). They are awesome for working out your hands and fingers. A real nice exercise and calming for the nerves as well!" I'm not adding the "iron ball" sense, just as an EC dictionary would define "white paper" as 白皮书, without bothering to mention the obvious -- that it could also simply mean 白纸. That has been emerging as a principle over time at CEDICT ("don't include the construct sense"). Don't bother trawling through older entries for "counterexamples" like 吃豆腐 where we have added the literal sense. We know they're there. It's not a high priority to ferret them out for the sake of "consistency". |
