促织 is onomatopoeia? I don't think so

in addition see MoE, ABC and WP

also adding (insect) for clarity, just like in the entry for 蛐蛐儿

Editor: "I don't think so"
We appreciate that you expressed yourself tentatively on this occasion :-)

I think it *is* quite likely be at least partly onomatopoeic in origin. N says so, anyway ~

Pleco GF says

Similarly, another word for cricket -- 蛐蛐兒 -- seems likely to be derived from the perceived sound of crickets.
And in the song 一只蛐蛐 by 雪村, in the written lyrics, the sound of the cricket is represented as [zhī] -- "它说知啊知"

As a matter of fact, "cricket" itself is onomatopoeic in origin:
"< Anglo-Norman criket and Old French criquet, crequet cricket, cicada (12th cent.; French criquet , now denoting the locust), of imitative origin, reflecting the sounds made by the insects. "
[OED]
Diff:
- 促織 促织 [cu4 zhi1] /old term onomat. for cricket/
