ABC also notes that it means 'Westerners', as does 漢語大詞典: 『舊指胡人， 後指白種人。』I assume this is just a derived meaning and can be disregarded as it's obvious that an Asian cannot have blue eyes 【新时代汉英大词典】 blue-eyed 碧眼红须 with blue eyes and (a) red beard – said of a westerner the word is usually not used alone, e.g. my friend used it with 金发 Editor: I don't know that 綠色 is a mistake. I think that 碧眼 probably means eyes that are blue or green or something in between, not literally blue necessarily -- and 碧 has elements of blue and green. Even in English "blue-eyed" is sometimes used loosely to mean a range of colors other than brown. My own eyes are not purely blue but probably have enough blue in them to be called 碧眼, I suspect. Yes, it's mostly used in combinations like 金髮碧眼 and indeed we have that expression in CEDICT. But it's also used as in the following examples ~ 1) 《熱蘭遮紀事》系列，則紀錄長髮碧眼的荷蘭人，以帆船、大砲攻城掠地的台灣殖民史 The "Zeelandia Memorandum" series depicts Taiwan's colonial history with a longhaired, blue-eyed Dutchman using ships and cannons to take the island. 2) 大女兒羅曼文滿五歲；小女兒羅曼雲兩歲半，兩個碧眼、捲髮，長得像洋娃 |
