You write "记 is not translated as myth but a record of something", but the character 记 doesn't even appear in this entry. It's 纪 in 创世纪, not 记. Example: 中华民族每一个民族都有自己的创世纪史诗。 Do you really think that each ethnic group in China has a "record" of the creation of the world? In the 楚辭, it says that 女媧 created the first humans from yellow clay. Is this a matter of "record" (not "myth"), in your view? (Even though Wikipedia calls 女媧 a "goddess in ancient Chinese mythology".) "creation record" is a collocation that means very little in isolation. It makes one think of phrases like "Obama's job creation record". "creation record" is the sort of stilted phrase one sees in Chinglish, where words are "translated" on a character-by-character basis, as you are attempting to do. "creation myth", on the other hand, is a well-understood term, and the current editors agree with the former editor that it's a good fit for the meaning of 创世纪. If you happen to believe that Nüwa really did literally make the first humans from clay, then I apologise for offending your sensibilities. But then what English term will you use to describe the Japanese 创世纪 or Australian Aboriginal 创世纪? |
