<< review queue entry 41855 - submitted by 'xiaoxiong' >> 昧於事理的孝行，如割股醫親之類。 MoE, ABC don't like ABC's translation. 愚 means 愚昧, such a person will obey their parents not out of fear, but just because he doesn't know any better e.g. this was used in a situation where a man's father gave a rather ridiculous name to the newly born child and when the wife tried to protest he immediately silenced her, his reasoning was that since his own name wasn't chosen by his parents either but by his grandfather, so the tradition must continue. this is called 愚孝 Editor: It's not only the ABC definition that says "blind devotion to one's parents", but also the other source, M, which says that 愚孝 is about a notion of filial piety that is *unquestioning* -- not "simple-minded". I'd say that 昧於事理 implies that the tradition of filial piety is "taken as a given", not that those who follow the tradition are ignorant or uneducated. Even if 愚 may be considered to mean "stupid", compounds like 愚孝 shouldn't necessarily be interpreted on a character-by-character basis. I would say that the example in M's definition -- 如割股醫親之類 -- makes it pretty clear that it's "blind" or "unquestioning" (rather than "simple-minded") filial piety.
