<< review queue entry 41357 >> I didn't know this myself before, but while watching a movie called Red Cliff, 平安 was explained to mean peace. I then did some searching and also some other online dictionaries tell the same, such as Google translator and http://www.nciku.com among some others as well. Zhongwen.com also gives it a meaning "peaceful". Editor: beware of anything you deduce from comparing translations. Beware especially of GT and nciku's "collections of synonyms". On the one hand, it seems strange and wrong that C-E dicts do not convey this sense at all. On the other hand, is it "peace" as opposed to war? and "peaceful" is even more ambiguous. This sense is in Zdic and MoE, with slightly different ranges. The best I understand it (it's a common sense after all) is "free from any threats, untroubled, living in safety". I tried to rephrase it accordingly. |
