Based on a suggestion by Yves in email correspondence.

"eagle/hawk/ any similar bird of prey" (or smthing like that)

I think it's an improvement -- much more concise; and it doesn't mislead the user with an authoritative-sounding but spurious reference to the Western scientific classification Accipitridae.
Diff:
- 老鷹 老鹰 [lao3 ying1] /colloquial term for birds in the family Accipitridae (such as eagles, hawks and kites) and similar birds such as falcons/
+ 老鷹 老鹰 [lao3 ying1] /(coll.) eagle/hawk/any similar bird of prey/
