<< review queue entry 42257 - submitted by 'xiaoxiong' >> basically, 蠢 originally stood for the 'to wiggle' meaning (so that's why it has two 虫 as its signific), and 惷 stood for the 'blunt, stupid' meaning (hence the 心), however it seems this distinction disappeared in both PRC and ROC, and only 蠢 is used nowadays not sure how we should handle this. the PRC dictionaries such as 现代汉语词典 and 现代汉语规范词典 still note the distinction here's what 现代汉语词典 (2005) has to say: 蠢1 chǔn <书>蠢动。 蠢2(惷) chǔn[形]①愚蠢:~材|这种做法太~了。②笨拙:~笨。 I can also type up what my 2010 copy of 现代汉语规范词典 has to say, but it's basically the same deal Editor: thank you for the analysis, what you say is unfounded. I like the way you say " this distinction disappeared in both PRC and ROC", like you had the definitive proof that it happened yesterday. See Kangxi. By your def, 蠢 doesn't mean "stupid" in trad, that's obviously wrong. Maybe you are getting that impression from 现代汉语词典 entry. Wrong reading. Other dicts give them as variants, period. Even KX 》惷惷,動擾貌。今俗本作蠢 Unihan says they are Z-variants, but "In any event, I'm afraid that right now it's probably best not to rely on it for anything" (Jenkins, 2010) Anyway, this kind of thing is best left alone unless one has spend the 20 last years in researching these matters. And it should be discussed diachronically: at what time is smth true? Saying that 蠢 doesn't mean "stupid" in KX time because it contains 虫 is not based on fact but on pedantic fancy post-analysis of a char that had been created tens of centuries before. |
