<< review queue entry 41470 - submitted by 'xiaoxiong' >> both are in use. 爲 is the original Kang Xi form, still standard in HK, 為 seems to be a Japanese invention (doesn't appear in KX), which became popular in Taiwan (and is now the standard there) our entries for 裏 and 裡 are formatted the same way Editor: what you are proposing is in short a small variation of format, the interest of which for the user, is still to demonstrate. But you take this opportunity to air your views, that's probably your point. Most of what you say is wrong. Don't you worry. I know all about 爲 and 為 :-) When I was young, 爲 was clearly the preferred variant in printed books (but not in handwriting); now the situation is being reversed, perhaps because of choices made by font designers. Anyway 爲 is *still* "standard" in Tw, and 為 too. ** a Japanese invention? ** The fact that 為 is not in KX doesn't show a thing, KX was not hunting after graphical variants. 為 being a Japanese influence is contradicted by (a) what i said above, 30 years ago the J were long out of Tw; (b) the fact that you will find 為 in (old) dictionary variants; you'll easily find 為 (f.i. 字学三正 (明): "爲俗作為") and in fact many other variant writings (c) would a conservative like MoE easily admit something that would be Japanese? (d) how do you think the form 为 came to evolve? it's a caoshu form of 為, that was re-kai-d to give the jianti So if you say that 爲 was the more common form in the past (in print), I say that is probably true but uninteresting; if you say that 為 is Japanese, or that it's not considered standard these days, I yell. |
