Rather than use antonym to clarify a definition, it is much clearer to the reader to use a synonymy. Also, there seems to be some difference between the American use of "as opposed to" and the British English. http://www.englishforums.com/English/AsOpposedTo/hkvbq/post.htm Another option, is to just use countryside instead of country, to avoid this ambiguity all together. Editor: I tend to agree with the person who wrote (about the Webster and Cambridge definitions of "as opposed to") ~ "educated speakers of both dialects (BrE and AmE) will recognize both definitions as having essentially the same meaning" |
