ABC agrees (though it also includes 'eagle' as the second meaning) Editor: If you believe "it's 鸢", then the definition should be "kite" rather than "hawk", because birds whose names end in 鸢 are generally called "*** kite" e.g. 黑翅鳶 is "black-winged kite" etc. And "hawks" generally have 鷹 at the end of their name, rather than 鸢 -- e.g. 赤腹鷹 Chinese sparrowhawk; 褐耳鷹 little banded goshawk, etc. In fact, the quoted definition gives a general description of a bird that is of the family Accipitridae (Chinese: 鷹科), rather than a specific description of a hawk or of a kite. Birds of this family mostly have 鷹 or 鳶 at the end of their name, hence the 也叫“鸢” in Z's definition of 老鹰 ~ 鸟,猛禽类,嘴蓝黑色,上嘴弯曲,脚强健有力,趾有锐利的爪,翼大善飞。吃蛇、鼠、鱼和其他鸟类。也叫“鸢” -- which is otherwise identical to the quoted 【漢語大詞典】definition. It's not wrong to say that 老鹰 is "鳶的俗稱" (common name for a kite), but it's also, as nciku's definition says, "鹰的通称", and 鹰 is a generic term for birds of the family Accipitridae --- 鷹科的鳥類一般都俗稱為鷹。(Wikipedia @ 鷹科). Note also nciku's def of 鹰 = 鹰科部分猛禽的统称. In other words, 老鹰 is just a common name for *any* bird such as an eagle, falcon, hawk, kite etc. It's not "eagle" or "hawk" or "kite", but *all* of them. "not really eagle"? -- Then why did they decide to name The Eagles (rock band) 老鷹合唱團? And why does my EC dictionary say eagle <<名詞>> 1 鷹; 老鷹? |
