Comment: Maybe 拉场子, literally, is more like "grab the scene" or "work the venue" rather than "draw people to a venue".

I don't see evidence elsewhere of MoE's rather specific 2nd def, and this shorter def would pretty much cover that situation anyway.
Diff:
- 拉場子 拉场子 [la1 chang3 zi5] /(of a performer) to put on a show (typically, at an open-air venue) or to keep the crowd entertained while other performers rest or change costume/(fig.) to enhance sb's reputation/to make a name for oneself/
+ 拉場子 拉场子 [la1 chang3 zi5] /(of a performer) to put on a show at an outdoor venue (temple fair, marketplace etc)/(fig.) to enhance sb's reputation/to make a name for oneself/
