Often, they are just a bad translation of their Chinese defs. In this case, nciku says "People who entertains [sic] people for money in public places", but - that's ungrammatical - 拉场子 isn't a kind of performer -- it's a verb - is it relevant (or even true) that the performers necessarily get paid?
