<< review queue entry 41909 - submitted by 'xiaoxiong' >> 鼅【康熙字典】本作䵹。俗作蜘。 鼄【康熙字典】此䵹鼄也。俗作蛛。 both 䵹 and 鼄 appear in 說文解字 with 蜘 and 蛛 as variant (或從虫) forms. the original signific part was 黽, and the phonetic in 蜘 was actually 智 (or to be more precise, an abbreviated version of its ancient full form). this was eventually dropped, so 䵹 became 鼅, and then finally 黽 was changed to 虫. this is pretty similar to how 鼃 became 蛙 |
