<< review queue entry 41898 - submitted by 'linglingb' >> The second ma is also in third, not in neutral tone. Cf entry in 现代汉语词典, p. 908. Editor: "The second ma is also in third, not in neutral tone." Hmm, that sounds very authoritative! Well, it's touching that you have so much faith in 现代汉语词典 :-) But I'm not so sure that I believe that it's always [ma3]. Yes, it's [ma3] in ~ - nciku - Dr.eye - Oxford Concise - 现代汉语词典, but it's [ma5] at ~ - ABC - New Century - New Age - Far East - MoE (dict.revised.moe.edu.tw) You know what? I think the pronunciation may vary from person to person! (just like "often" in English -- with or without the "t") Of course, [ma3], coming before a 1st tone, would be subject to tone sandhi and would be pronounced as a half-3rd tone (a "fall from half-low to low" [YR Chao]), which could be a bit hard to distinguish from [ma5], when spoken quickly. |
