The confusion is maximum when one of Z's sources says: [papa]∶爸爸 阿公要煮咸,阿妈要煮淡 (if you know the Tw song, you will find this roaring funny. Seems like some lexicographers really make things up, based on half-digested info; here Tw 阿嬤 mistakenly supposed to be Mandarin 阿妈, hence 阿公 must mean "father", right?) Probability is that this really was a colloquial word for "grandfather"; as such, it was only natural that it be used a) as a polite address b) for a wife to address her husband's father: in traditional terminology, the husband is the wife's father, so his father is grandfather, his sister is aunt etc. As a word in modern Mandarin though, it would be a conscious borrowing of the Taiwanese word, hence apparent redundancy in my def |
