Editor: I think "to hit the big time", suggested by Google Translate's "hit it big" and "big break" works very nicely in almost all the examples I found, such as ~

The failure of biotech to achieve stellar growth is generally attributed mainly to the lack of a good legal framework and an unfavorable environment, and to a lack of creativity and innovation

Kinokuniya has never attained mass popularity,

The medical equipment industry is not subject to dramatic ups and downs.

but no big break came until he won a part in Four Weddings And A Funeral.

In these examples, "of illustrious reputation" seems a bit off.
Diff:
+ 大紅大紫 大红大紫 [da4 hong2 da4 zi3] /to hit the big time/
