I am aware that many of Wieger's explanations of characters, usually taken from the shuo wen, have been overtaken by subsequent research, but this is at least evidence that the pronunciation shai3 is not new and not confined to Taiwan. Editor: what's the use of pushing this kind of argument? What benefit will it be to anybody? Just want to be "right"? substandard and the result of a confusion, that's what everybody says. An old wrong is not a right. |
