Editor: In some of the J examples, they are much more direct ~
"everybody thought he was sucking up to [him] to get into his good books"
"She was all over him"
;-)

And in other cases, less direct ~
"You are very gallant"
"the men were very nice to her indeed"
etc.

"attention" can be used in the plural in an expression like "directing his attentions to ..."
but I think it sounds odd in "pay excessive attentions" (only eight G hits for that phrase)

# 獻殷勤 献殷勤 [xian4 yin1 qin2] /to pay excessive attentions to sb/to court/to fawn over sb/
+ 獻殷勤 献殷勤 [xian4 yin1 qin2] /to be particularly attentive to (an attractive young lady or man etc)/to fawn upon (an influential politician etc)/to court sb's favor/to ingratiate oneself/
