I am pretty sure this is *not* the right way to say it in English -- the idea is you form like a visor with your hands, when looking far away. Editor: "shade" is better than "shelter" here. I just wanted to check whether it is necessarily about looking far away, before processing. Looked at GI, and found, for example ~ 航天员刘伯明手搭凉棚看书 so it seems to be (usually) just about shading one's eyes from strong light. F's definition is uncharacteristically ncikuesque ~ "shade the eye from the sun by lifting a hand and holding it horizontally against the forehead" (Thanks for the instructions on how to use my hand to shade my eyes ... er, "eye"?!) :-) I noticed that some of the people in the GI pics were not holding their hands properly horizontal (tut tut) some were not out in the sun, some were using both hands, and most were shading more than one eye! ;-) ;-) |
