<< review queue entry 38381 - submitted by 'fengli' >> Recommend removing some redundant/duplicate definitions. Editor: The problem with doing that is that 經常 can be either an adjective ... /day-to-day/everyday/daily/ as in 加班对他来说是经常事 or 经常开支 ... or an adverb /frequently/constantly/regularly/often/ And if you throw away the terms that are unambiguously adjectives -- "day-to-day" and "everyday" -- you make the definition look like it's suggesting that 經常 is always an adverb (because "daily" can be an adverb). And even as an adjective, "daily" has multiple senses; so the other two synonyms help with disambiguation. But I think the adverb sense is more common, so I am going to put that first in the def. That will also isolate "daily" from the group of four adverbs, so that it will be made clearer that "daily" is an adjective here. By the way, our previous def is identical to the def of at least three other publishers -- FLTRP, New Age and ABC. Except that we omitted the hyphens in "day-to-day", and they need to be restored. Also, in those other publishers' dictionaries the adjectives and adverbs are segregated -- e.g. ①day-to-day; everyday; daily ②frequently; constantly; regularly; often and we don't have the option of doing that with CEdict's flat entry structure. |
