If I understand correctly, the MOE definition translates to: "Figuratively, the narrowest of rivers still flows along one strip of water (?). Later came to refer to the idea that, although a river may isolate two places, that river is not sufficient to restrict those places from communicating." Or maybe the the first part is more like: "A flowing river is only as narrow as a strip of cloth." That would be more indicative of the comparative smallness of any water-filled separation. Anyhow, this phrase is used often in conjunction with 邻邦 when referring to Sino-Japanese relations (and sometimes cross-strait). ex: 『中国和日本是一衣带水的邻邦...』，『中国与日本是一衣 带水的邻国...』，『中国情势的发展和前途自受到一衣带水的台 湾同胞关注。』 |
