<< review queue entry 38256 - submitted by 'cchase' >> eg 中國貓熊野放計畫,昨天邁出第一步。六頭圈養長大的貓熊,從牠們出生 長大的成都貓熊基地,被載送到四川 actually they are a kind of 熊 not a kind of 貓 Editor: this is hardly the question. 黄鼠狼 is not a kind of wolf. The origin of the word is debatable. Wp quotes 1935年出版的《中华大字典》「熊」之(三):「熊貓,獸名,似貓而善升木。 」從所附熊貓圖看,指的是小熊貓。.... which could be an explanation: western fashion, the name "panda" was extended from the red panda to the giant panda, although the first is catlike and the second not. Anyway: the word is used in PRC as well as Taiwan, but a minority in both places (I'm basing this on G-hits, dicts, personal experience and directly asking a Tw born-and-bred); it is also used by scientists (pedants). When I was young, giant panda was NOT classified among Ursidae, if I remember correctly; maybe we'll wait until the next change in taxonomy to argue about the logic of the name :-) |
