<< review queue entry 37696 - submitted by 'goldyn_chyld' >> A common phrase among Taiwanese. Sentence: 台北郊區能碰到很多檳榔西施。 Editor: While 槟榔小姐 and 槟榔妹 may be commonly heard in spoken Chinese, those two terms do not appear anywhere in "Taiwan Panorama." I think Yves may be right that it is a (perhaps pseudo-literary) term used by the media. But 檳榔西施 is used in 15 different TP articles going back to at least 1999, and has "About 3,400,000 results". And I don't think it can be considered a construct. 2007 結合檳榔西施的檳榔攤,藉著閃爍的各色燈管和透明櫃的花俏設計,展現生猛有力的美學觀。 The betel-nut stands where the beauties work, with their gaudy lights and transparent counters, exhibit a fierce and powerful aesthetic. 2006 到底誰是「台客」?... ...或是那一頭金髮、妝扮清涼、對展現自己充滿自信的檳榔西施? Just who is a Taike? ... ... Or maybe a bleach-blonde betelnut beauty boldly wearing a skimpy outfit? 1999 年輕女孩大量投入泡沫紅茶辣妹、檳榔西施就業市場,卻引起許多批評的聲浪 many youths are taking jobs as bubble tea babes and betel nut nymphs, which has elicited considerable criticism. |
