The CEDICT definition of 迪 was originally /direct/follow/ -- i.e. the same as dict.cn Later, "to enlighten" was added and "follow" was deemed to be a verb, but not "direct." "phonetic di" was added, then removed, although its remnant can be seen in the def of 廸. I suppose 迪 is most often used as a phonetic, actually.
