<< review queue entry 37666 - submitted by 'alanwatson' >> Have mainly taken this from MoE. Baidu also gives the xi2 pronunciation and the extremely meaning, Editor: 1) don't say Baidu says this or that, Baidu just gives a copy of various dictionaries entries. It has no first-hand knowledge, and carries no weight 2) you are misreading. These dicts give xi1, not xi2. They don't give "extremely" either. Only the list of English terms at the end gives "extremely". There is no reliable indication that 腊 (in trad) is also pronounced la4. 3) MoE is basing itself on Kangxi. But I give the full extract: 又久也。《禮•郊特牲•猶明淸與醆酒於舊澤之酒也註》爲其味厚 腊毒也。《釋文》腊,音昔。隱義云:腊,久也。久酒有毒。 《前漢•五行志》味厚者腊毒。《註》腊,久也。味厚者爲毒久 也。 又極也。《鄭語》毒之酋腊者,其殺也滋速。《註》腊, 極也。 又亟也。《周語》厚味實腊毒。《註》腊,亟也。 So 腊毒 is diversely interpreted as 久, 極,亟 (2 different words, please note). This is a matter for a scholarly note in an edition of these archaic texts, not for an entry in an all-purpose dictionary. 4) This kind of thing is practically useless. There are so many things requiring attention in the dict. I don't really believe you are studying ancient texts and being arrested by the exact meaning of such chars. We are ill-fitted to play hair-splitting scholars on such matters, we must concentrate on what we are able to investigate. Copying Moe or anybody is not enough, it's not our project. NB: here 腊 needed to be changed to xi1, that was a factual error that needed being corrected, it's a welcomed change (although 99% of Chinese wouldn't know to read xi1 in the correct place, I suppose) |
