I think it more readily suggests that "the courage was not originally in you." I resisted the temptation to add "to get a bit of dutch courage" because dutch courage (1) involves actually imbibing, whereas the 吃 in 吃熊心豹子胆 is, I presume, used figuratively (2) is specifically about alcohol, unlike 吃熊心豹子胆 Even ~ 熊心豹胆是一个成语，形容非常大胆，但是我觉得它具有贬义的色彩，并不是说真正的很勇敢，可能 还有一点讽刺的意味吧。If you see 你是不是吃了雄心豹子胆 in a Chinese drama or movie or others,it usually refers to offensing others。 Yves ~ It's true that you find a lot of "Did you eat bear's heart...?" But I also found such as "today I will eat bear's heart and talk to the lady of my heart" or "he must have eaten bear's heart to answer the teacher like that" so the meaning is not really negative, but the saying implies that that courage was not originally in you; you have beaten yourself into having such courage. |
