This definition was intended to circumvent the editors' decision *not* to group the various senses of a
word in CEDICT entries. It appears to be based on a source similar to ABC, which says
①repair and maintain
②prune; trim
and proceeds on the assumption that there are two separate senses --
one which is about doing repairs, and another which is about cutting

Nciku, similarly, has this dichotomy:
1. restore and maintain; repair and preserve
2. cut; prune; clip; trim

Also, zdic:
(1) [repair and maintain]
(2) [trim;prune]

Again, it's a case of lazy dictionary compilers "sprucing up" others' definitions rather than writing a
more useful definition from scratch.

"repair and maintain" would have been better than our "repair or maintain" --- it's misleading to
suggest that 修整 could mean "to repair (a broken TV)."

How do we interpret 把脸修整 in a sentence like this?
("repair and maintain one's face"? "trim one's face"? "prune one's face"?)

In fact, I think there is just *one* sense, which translates in various ways in different contexts --
"to make minor (cosmetic) adjustments to ensure that something is (kept) in the desired condition"

spruce up ~

finish (a rough surface) ~

tend a garden

touch up a photo

groom (not "trim"!) one's hair

You could extend the definition even further to cover other contexts, but the half-dozen I have given
should be enough to convey the gist -- plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose.
Diff:
- 修整 修整 [xiu1 zheng3] /to repair or maintain/to prune or trim/
# + 修整 修整 [xiu1 zheng3] /to tend (a garden)/to groom (one's hair)/to finish (a rough surface)/to trim (a lawn)/to touch up (a photo)/to spruce up/
+ 修整 修整 [xiu1 zheng3] /to spruce up/to renovate/to tend (a garden)/to groom (one's hair)/to finish (a rough surface)/to trim (a lawn)/to touch up (a photo)/
