I don't know how to say that in English, "walled-in path"?; rare and old meaning I guess, but probably explains the rest.

In other words, "leading to a main hall" or "to a tomb" is spurious, the important thing is that in it is in a garden, or a home yard, or a tomb's grounds; not outside, not a road for public usage.

Z : 高楼之间带有顶棚的通道;走廊;

From examples on N and jukuu, it seems that 甬道 could also be a chimney (mountaineering), a tunnel i.e. passage between grottoes, and especially a tunnel in a tomb.
I find this on a different site(http://culture.longhoo.net/special/liuchao/today/userobject1ai765110.html):
Certainly it sound like the entrance tunnel to a tomb.
