Editor: oh hey, this has finally made it into the dict.
For PRC standard, 土豆 means potato; but in Taiwanese "tuo da" (approximate pronunciation) means peanut, and is freely exported into guoyu.

Conversely, trying to use 土豆 for "potato" in Tw is a no-no.

You should have been there to enjoy this conversation between a PRC girl and a Tw girl, the former explaining that we were having the 土豆 from her garden for dinner, and the latter marveling that you could grow them in the Paris region and that they could be as big as the PRC girl was saying; while I, the only party to understand the confusion, was laughing inside and waiting to see how far it could go.
